Skate bearings are typically steel or ceramic. Both have their advantages (cost vs. quality) because steel is cheaper than ceramic, but ceramic is known to be higher quality and less maintenance. They are normally 608 Bearings with skate ratings or Abec ratings, these bad boi's are the reason your wheels spin or don't.
